Professor Rhee Sung-min of Kyung Hee University Hospital announced on the 24th that he received the Best Oral Presentation Award at the 'TOSSM (Thai Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine) & ASSA (ASEAN Society for Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy) & KSES (Korean Shoulder and Elbow Society) Combined meeting', held for three days starting from the 6th at the Royal Cliff Hotel in Pattaya, Thailand, with about 1,000 attendees.

The award-winning research is on "The Effect of a Scaffold Made of Hyaluronic Acid Porous Polymer with 'Atelocollagen' Inserted on Rotator Cuff Healing in a Rabbit Chronic Rotator Cuff Tear Model." It was conducted in collaboration with Professor Kim Jae-yoon of the School of Chemical Engineering and Polymer Science at Sungkyunkwan University and was selected as a 'First Research in Life' project by the National Research Foundation of Korea last year.

Even if rotator cuff repair is performed successfully, re-tears often occur because the sutured area does not heal well. Professor Rhee said, "Injectables administered to patients undergoing suture for rotator cuff tears are liquid, so they do not stay in the desired area and flow down to unnecessary parts." He added, "Through this research, we have developed a scaffold containing both atelocollagen and hyaluronic acid, which are necessary for rotator cuff healing." He continued, "This is deeply meaningful in that it is the development of another therapeutic agent that can stay at the desired suture site for a long time and promote healing."

Meanwhile, Professor Rhee concurrently serves as the CEO of the digital healthcare startup 'Itphy'. Itphy is developing 'RingDoc', a service that connects doctors and patients in a single ring. Through this, they are facilitating the smooth sharing of medical information and easy communication between doctors and patients.
